More of the Most Powerful Women 2017
Cori Abraham
SVP, Development &
International
Oxygen Media
Oxygen has Abraham to
thank for its successful
rebrand and shift toward
crime programming. She helped develop series
such as " The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway, "
" Cold Justice " and " The Jury Speaks, " and already
is scoping out more buzzy crime programs that
will resonate with the network's growing female
audience. Even the ever-enthusiastic, high-energy
Abraham occasionally needs to recharge. " For me it
is running or hiking, " she says. " Any situation where
I physically cannot answer the phone or read an
email keeps me sane. "
Theano
Apostolou
EVP, Communications
Starz
It's been a big year for
Apostolou, and not just
because of her July
wedding in Greece. As the chief spokesperson for
Starz, Apostolou navigated the transition associated
with Lionsgate's acquisition of the premium channel
late last year. And she continued to influence the
C-suite in important decisions regarding personnel,
programming, marketing and PR. Apostolou also is an
advocate for women in the cable industry, emphasizing
the importance of uniting for equal pay and
treatment. " Gender discrimination, harassment and
abuse will continue if women are not in positions of
power, " she says. " We are still functioning in systems
and organizational constructs that were determined
solely by men without female input. "
Rebecca
Arbogast
SVP, Global Public
Policy
Comcast Corporation
DC insider Arbogast
oversees the development
and coordination of public policy efforts across
all of Comcast-no small feat. Her roots in policy
are deep and include a run as the chief of the FCC's
Telecommunications International Bureau. Arbogast
says the " continued explosion of engaging, fabulous
storytelling " will dominate industry headlines in the
coming year. The story with her favorite character
is Netflix's " Grace and Frankie. " Arbogast picks Lily
Tomlin as Frankie " because she is still having fun! "

Maria Arias
VP, Diversity &
Inclusion
Comcast
Corporation
Governance, workforce,
supplier diversity,
programming distribution and content creation,
and community investment are the five pinnacles
of Comcast's Diversity & Inclusion program-and
together they are the core focus of diversity champion
Arias. Look for her to continue to oversee her
team's progress across these focus areas, while also
sharing corporate diversity best practices with other
companies. " We need more male sponsors who are
committed to supporting women, because men still
hold the majority of senior leadership roles, " she
says. " So, in many ways, it's up to them to make real
change happen. "
Janice Arouh
President,
Cable Network
Distribution &
Marketing
Entertainment
Studios Networks
Seasoned distribution exec Arouh is tenacious in
navigating the industry's tectonic shifts and securing
deals and revenue for Entertainment Studios
Networks. Driven by strategic problem-solving and
adaptability, she's finishing up another year making
power moves for ESN's seven nets. She successfully
negotiated the DISH-JusticeCentral.TV carriage
agreement that saw the network launch on the
service this March and reach more than 40 million
homes. And she's been a force in the launch of comedy
game show " Funny You Should Ask " on Comedy.
TV. Her best advice for relieving stress? " Eight hours
of sleep every night! "
Karen Bailey
SVP, Original
Programming
Starz
Bailey has overseen
production of some of
Starz's most successful
recent projects, including historical fantasy
" Outlander " and limited series " White Princess. "
During her decade-long tenure with Starz, the North
Carolina native helped build the company's original
programming department from the ground up in
the competitive " Peak TV " era, using her invaluable
experience as a feature producer to identify series
November 2017
for the premium channel. Asked to pick a famous
woman to have dinner with, Bailey chose late culinary
icon Julia Child, but with one stipulation: " Only
if she is doing the cooking! "
Gina Balian
EVP, Series
Development
FX Networks & FX
Productions
Balian has continued to
flourish despite taking
on a number of new responsibilities this past year.
She now solely leads all series development for FX
Networks and FX Productions and also is in charge
of FNG's global programming unit, developing and
acquiring programs to simultaneously launch in the
US, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Balian's currently
developing " Trust, " an FX limited series about
the Getty family, set to air in 2018. She hopes the
recent focus on gender equality is just the start of a
bigger conversation: " There is still more work to do
to unpack these systemic issues and many people I
know are committed to working on this. "
Molly Battin
SVP & Chief Brand
Strategy Officer
Turner Broadcasting
Turner has reinvigorated
its brand in recent years,
and Battin is the chief
architect who's been responsible for leading the
global brand strategy and getting the message out.
A leader at Turner since joining the company in
2000, she stepped in this year to also oversee the
company's corporate communications and corporate
marketing teams, for which she led a group reorg.
She's also made it a personal priority to relay as
much information as possible in the face of Time
Warner's impending merger with AT&T, initiating
monthly status calls for the full communications,
media and branding teams.
Carolyn
Bernstein
EVP, Head of
Global Scripted
Development &
Production
National Geographic
Bernstein's leadership has paved the way forward
in content through Nat Geo's rebranding last year.
Pursuing premium science, adventure and exploration
programming opportunities, she's successfully worked
