OUT OF THE DARK
At a time when the headlines are full of allegations of sexual harassment,
misogyny and assault, it feels especially important to shine a
light on the best and brightest women leaders in our business. The
allegations against Harvey Weinstein opened the floodgates, with
women coming forward with other distressing stories about powerful
figures in Hollywood, media and beyond. Just as we need to expose
evildoings, we simultaneously need to highlight the female trailblazers
who are leading their companies into a new age.
I'd like to think there's also a bit of a ripple effect that comes from
recognizing amazing female leaders. I hope reading their accomplishments
and insights inspires not only other women, but also causes
companies to reflect on where they are when it comes to issues such
as gender parity, female board membership and diversity as a whole.
It's kind of funny that we asked this year's honorees who'd they most
like to have dinner with, living or dead, because I'm pretty sure they'd
have no shortage of dinner requests themselves. Who wouldn't want
to pick the brains of the top execs in media? And I'm not just talking
about those pitching a show or business investment! These are the
women who can offer insights on how technology is changing our
day-to-day lives, what it's like to shatter the glass ceiling and what TV
shows out there are truly binge-worthy.
Each year, this list gets harder to compile. The numbers bear this out,
with WICT's just-released PAR Industry Diversity Survey showing
increases survey-over-survey for women at the executive and senior
management levels, as well as professional levels. Other areas remain
flat however and retention continues to be an area for improvement.
Many, myself included, breathed a sigh of relief this year when NCTA's
board completed a study looking at industry associations and essentially
gave them the stamp of approval, agreeing that none of the
groups should be shuttered or consolidated. Even with progress, it's
imperative to continue to set benchmarks and provide the support that
groups like NAMIC, WICT and others offer.
After all, we've seen what breeds in darkness.
