ESPN
Say you work in cable, and " friends "
are bound to ask you if you can get
them a job at ESPN. But while a gig
at the King of Sports Media remains a
fantasy for most, ESPN employees live
that dream every day. Debates over
sports costs and carriage fees rage
on, but that kind of crowd noise does
little to tamp the enthusiasm of these
dedicated ESPN employees. In addition
to a free itness center, an on-site
subsidized daycare center that just
opened last fall, eldercare options and
tuition reimbursement, employees also
get generous discounts to Disney resorts,
hotels, cruises and merchandise.
Meanwhile, ESPN's formal Diversity
Council considers recruitment, pay
equity, development and retention to
ensure the company maintains a diverse
workforce. All in all, a great place
to work. And no, we can't get you a job
there...
Motorola Mobility
While some have mistakenly declared
the death of the set-top box, Google's
purchase of Motorola-along with the
arrival of Marwan Fawaz as EVP-suggests
Moto will continue to be a vibrant
and exciting place to work. Beneits include
educational assistance, employee
discounts on Moto products, on-site
daycare at some locations (and discounts
for off-site facilities) and lexible
work arrangements. A Twitter-like forum
on Moto's intranet lets employees
share photos, comment on successes,
recognize achievements and help each
other solve problems, among other
things. And employees can volunteer
with the Motorola Mobility Foundation,
which helps fund education, community,
health and wellness, and disaster
response. During last year's Global
Week of Service, nearly 5K employees
worldwide volunteered at various nursing
homes, zoos, parks and other facilities.
Beyond all that, who knows what
Google has in store for this longtime
cable vendor. Go Moto!

Scripps Networks
Interactive
While Scripps' Knoxville, TN, location
can complicate recruiting efforts, it can
also be a selling point for execs seeking
a different lifestyle for their families. As
for beneits, there are many: A generous
paternity/maternity leave program,
adoption assistance with paid leave and
up to a $5,000 reimbursement, summer
lex-time and tuition reimbursement
(just raised to $5,250 per employee per
year vs. $4,000 in 2011). Earlier this year,
Scripps launched its inaugural " Get Active "
employee wellness initiative during
which employees walked more than 287
million steps and exercised for more than
18,400 hours. Scripps' Mentoring Experience,
meanwhile, connects mentors and
mentees for a formal, year-long program.
And last Oct, Scripps hosted Knoxville's
irst ever Diversity Summit, a one-day
dialogue designed to enhance marketplace
diversity in the region. In fact,
people of color comprise one quarter of
Scripps' management team.
Time Warner Cable
Time Warner Cable has a lot going for
it in the cool department, not least of
which is that its headquarters resides
in the Center of the Universe (aka, New
York City). Interestingly, however, the
company exudes a down-to-earth quality,
cultivated largely by low-key CEO
Glenn Britt, whose quiet leadership has
shepherded the company through many
storms. Among employee beneits is
TWC's generous retirement program and
pension plan (a rarity these days), and
robust internal training programs as well
as subsidized itness facilities, dry cleaning
pick-ups and a lexible spending
account for daycare. Mentoring includes
a formal 12-month one-on-one program
and another speciically for women. In
fact, female TWC execs have grown
from 18% in 2007 to 32% in 2011. It's
no accident that in 2011 TWC received
the WICT PAR Top Operator of the Year
Award, as well as the Diversity Champion
award from the Kaitz Foundation.

Turner Broadcasting System
TBS and TNT command mega-ratings. CNN's a global powerhouse. Add Turner's
growing sports and children's programming holdings to the mix, and what's
not to love about this Atlanta-based programming giant? As for employee
beneits, there's on-site itness and wellness centers, access to sports tickets,
up to $5,000 in tuition reimbursement, lextime, telecommuting, job sharing,
and compressed work week options and part-time arrangements. And through
Turner's Backup Care Advantage Program, employees and their families can
access short-term backup and emergency care options. Meanwhile, its Professional
Development Center provides on-site, instructor-led classes and online
training on leadership, management and other topics. Business resource groups
like Turner Women Today and Black Professionals @ Turner offer mentoring
programs, along with several programs at individual business units like CNN,
Turner Ad Sales and
Turner Entertainment
Networks.
Turner also encourages
volunteerism,
giving employees a
whopping 40 hours
of volunteer release
time per year. All in all, this is the kind
of place people simply want to work.
And it's no wonder why.
