THE INFLUENTIALS
Connie Orlando
SVP, Specials, Music &
News, BET Networks
A leading creative
force at BET, Orlando
brings innovative
ideas as both an executive,
and executive
producer of BET's annual " Black Girls
Rock Awards. " Under Orlando's leadership,
" The BET Awards " this year saw a
ratings increase of 16 percent over last
year, reaching 22 million viewers. Additionally,
Orlando is in charge of the " BET
Truth Series, " which produced original
documentaries " Katrina 10 Years Later:
Through Hell in High Water " and the
NAACP Award-winning " Muhammad Ali:
The People's Champ. "
Michael Parker
SVP, Western New
England Region,
Comcast Cable
Under Parker's watch,
the division earned
from the Hartford
Business Journal and
Vermont Business Magazine recognition
as one of the best places to work in
Connecticut and Vermont, respectively.
He's admittedly biased, but Parker says
that NBCU's live production of " The Wiz
Live " deserves special recognition. It
" set the standard by making live entertainment
accessible for people who
have a visual disability, " he says, " and
I'm proud of our company for recognizing
that diversity is not just about
differences in race, gender, culture and
color, for example, and respects different
thoughts and experiences. "
Bret Perkins
VP, External and
Government Affairs,
Comcast
Perkins, who joined
team Comcast in 2001,
is responsible for
Comcast's Government
Affairs team in Philadelphia, as well as the
company's outreach efforts to third-party
groups. During his tenure the company
has grown from operating in 2,500 comCablefax:
The Magazine
munities to 6,000 communities, and his
responsibilities have included implementing
regulatory and legislative initiatives
at the local level, managing relationships
with state and local intergovernmental
associations, developing political strategy,
and grassroots communications. He
believes DOCSIS 3.1 is the tech that will
most benefi t cable in the near future,
noting the industry " is once again demonstrating
leadership in delivering faster
speeds, widely available. "
Joiava Philpott
VP, Regulatory Affairs,
Cox Communications
Philpott provides legal
counsel to internal
business clients.
She has tremendous
industry relationships,
and is relied upon for her broad
expertise of video, broadband and
telephone regulations. Philpott manages
all advocacy fi lings at the FCC as well
as across 18 states in the various public
utilities commissions. She is a co-chair
for the Atlanta Chapter of the Federal
Communications Bar Association, and
was recently appointed to serve on
the national board of directors. The
owner of two black Labrador retrievers
(named " Hugs " and " Kisses " ), Philpott
is a founding member of the Georgia
Association of Black Women Attorneys
and Sister-to-Sister Mentoring program,
which benefi ts at-risk young girls.
D'Angela Proctor
SVP, Original
Programming &
Production, TV One
Proctor has led the
network to a defi nitive
trajectory that is sure to
solidify the network as
the premiere destination for viewers who
want to see a multi-dimensional view of
African American life and culture. Under
her leadership in the past 12 months, TV
One had its most watched June primetime
performance among key demos including
P2+, P25-54 and W25-54. Proctor would
like to see more improved performances
in diversity. " There's rarely an African
September 2016
American woman at the network [level]
with the power to green-light a program, "
she says.

between the distribution group and
the networks in order to foster internal
communications and better serve the
interests of the networks when dealing
with affi liates. TV Everywhere is the technology
that will most benefi t cable in the
near term, he says, noting: " The demand
from viewers to be able to consume content
when and where they want will only
increase over the next year, and TVE sites
and apps give operators and programmers
the ability to meet that demand. "
Sharmila Ravi
VP Software
Engineering,
Comcast Cable
In March of this year,
Ravi was promoted to
her current position.
She's responsible for

at Comcast. She brings more than two
