Rising to the Top
It's always diffi cult to put together a list like this. Once upon a time, the challenge came
in fi nding multicultural executives in a range of high-level positions within the industry.
But through years of hard work and refl ection, and with the help of organizations such as
NAMIC, WICT, T. Howard and Emma Bowen, that has changed. These days, the challenge
comes in having to make the diffi cult decision of who gets on the Most Infl uential Minorities
list and who doesn't.
That's a good thing! Even though it's painful not to be able to include some really talented
professionals. I expect and hope that settling on honorees is only going to get tougher going
forward. Not only are companies putting diversity top of mind, but many of the executives
honored between these pages are doing their part to make sure there is a diverse talent
pool within the industry. And beyond the more traditional mentorships, these individuals are
getting out into their communities and making a real difference.
Take Scripps Networks' Derek Chang. He is a founding board member of Row New York-a
group dedicated to teaching young people in under-resourced communities the sport of
competitive rowing. And it slips in some academic tutoring, while equipping teens with skills
that will serve them well outside of the water. Turner's Pascal Desroches is on the board of
Prep for Prep, a leadership development program for NYC students of color. Its track record
is amazing. More than 90 percent of students who go through the program are accepted to
prestigious universities around the world, with many alumni becoming MBAs, JDs, PhDs,
Rhodes Scholars or White House Fellows. There are countless Big Brothers and Big Sisters
among this year's crop of honorees and plenty of United Way supporters.
And these are busy, busy people! Keep this in mind when you see the bad news-those
headlines that leave you shaking your head or when you see places diversity hasn't taken
hold. There is still plenty of work to be done, but there are bright, dedicated trailblazers on
the frontlines making it happen. Join me in celebrating them in this issue and at the NAMICCablefax
breakfast during Diversity Week.
