achieve.

To help meet these challenges in
its 50-room OR, the perioperative services
department at Vanderbilt Medical
Center in Nashville, Tennessee,
designed a perioperative float pool.
The pool was created using full-time
15
positions in time slots no one wanted,
vacant positions, and an additional
three full-time positions allotted for
the float pool by administration.
Before creating the pool, OR leaders
performed extensive data assessments
of the number of staff, staff
hours worked, staff preferences, block
surgery times, block run over times,
and overtime.

ORBMC 2018 arms business leaders
with best practices
S
an Antonio, Texas, played host
to the 2018 OR Business Management
Conference (ORBMC),
attended by more than 400 surgical
services leaders, business managers,
and industry leaders from across the
US. Attendees chose from a menu of
topics-including strategies to increase
case volume, efficiency, and data transparency,
right-size the OR, and create
a more collegial work environment-to
build an educational meal that satisfied
their hunger for new ideas.
During a preconference workshop,
" Powerful presentation skills to guide
your professional life, " Jane McLeod,
MSN, RN, and Sue Tetzlaff, MHA, RN,
RHIA, FACHE, demystified public speaking
with proven techniques to boost
confidence and success when making
a case for a new service line or securing
funds for a new initiative. McLeod
and Tetzlaff, cofounders of Capstone
Leadership Solutions, Inc, in Sault Ste
Marie, Michigan, gave participants a
chance to try out these techniques by
presenting to their colleagues during
the workshop.
Attendees also had time to network
with their peers and to talk with industry
leaders about their products and
