one respondent reported 60 years of
nursing experience and 59 years of
perioperative nursing experience. The
distribution of the sample was 7.5%
self-identified as preoperative nurses,
65.1% as intraoperative nurses, 12.0%
as post-anesthesia-care nurses, and
15% entered other. For gender, 89.3%
identified as female, 9.7% identified as
male, and 1.2% identified as non-binary
or preferred to not answer the question.
Despite extensive efforts to reach
non-certified nurses the sample is heavily
weighted to nurses who hold a certification.
Regarding certification, 81.7%
of the sample were certified, 15.7%
have never been certified, and 2.6%
had previously held a certification but
were now lapsed. Eighty four percent
of the certified respondents held only
one credential, but 16% reported holding
two or more credentials. Of the certified
nurses who reported the certification
held, 66.1% held the CNOR credential
from CCI, 14.7% held CPAN, and 12.7%
held the CAPA certification. These last
two credentials are administered by the
American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing
Certification.
We also gathered information on the
education and training these nurses
experienced upon entry to the specialty.
Surprisingly, 37.3% of the respondents
reported that they had no formalized
orientation program for their role; 34%
reported they had a program developed
by their facility or health system; and
23.8% said they had the Periop 101
course administered by AORN. To the
best of our knowledge, this is the first
large, random sample reporting data
on perioperative education and training
programs used to facilitate entry into
the specialty.
Conclusion
In their 2019 Fact Sheet, the AACN also
stated: " The need to attract students
from underrepresented groups in nursing-specifically
men and individuals
from African American, Hispanic, Asian,

American Indian, and Alaskan native
backgrounds-is a high priority for nursing
profession. "
As the certifying body for perioperative
nurses, CCI agrees with the AACN
statement. In the August 2022 issue of
OR Manager, CCI will detail our efforts
to address both the perioperative nursing
shortage and the need to increase
the diversity of our specialty.
The early results on the descriptive
statistics from the 2021 research
study conducted by CCI must be interpreted
with caution. Even though this
was a large, diverse sample, it is likely
that the over-representation of certified
nurses means that this was not a representative
sampling of all perioperative
nurses. However, this sample does differ
in demographic makeup from both
the overall US population and from the
larger group of US nurses.
The age distribution of the nurses
working in surgery is anchored in nurses
45-64 years of age. In this sample,
less than 18% of the respondents were
under 35 years of age. It has become
increasingly difficult to recruit younger
nurses to work in the OR. The data from
this study can inform workforce planning
efforts and lay the groundwork for further
research. The CCI Research Foundation
could prioritize funding for nursing
workforce studies to address the
shortfalls of this data. There are rich
opportunities to recruit a more diverse
workforce to meet the future demand for
perioperative nurses. ORM
