that are crucial to the success of any
procedure. A good team is a team that
is well-informed and knows what is required
of them. "

Leadership is critical to create, change,
and sustain culture. A surgeon's relationship
with OR leadership differs
depending on the person and the specialty;
not to mention the politics of any
given facility.

and clarity into
them have better
outcomes than
patients treated
by teams with
poorly defined
expectations.

Educating staff takes time and resources,
which can be a struggle for OR
leadership. Having time as a surgeon
to educate OR staff on what to expect
during a procedure can be even more
challenging. Dr Matson makes an effort
to meet with the OR team before significant
or complicated cases to ensure
everything will run smoothly. She also
tries to notify leaders immediately if
any complications arise that need to be
corrected and meets with them at least
once a month to discuss any changes
Dr Chow keeps a close relationship
with the OR manager and nursing leadership.
" So much of it is understanding
what can be done together. Most
physicians have almost no administrative
power, and the nurse leader is in
a unique position because they most
likely have that reach. "
For Dr Matson, she has the number
of her facility's OR manager in her
phone. " When I have an issue, I approach
the manager with respect in
order to have my request met. I am not
treated like a complainer, which helps
to establish a good culture, " she says.
" Most staff don't get offended or take it
personally if you offer to help them get
more experience or training. Everyone
knows it comes down to what is best
for the patient, and management knows
that as a surgeon, that is my number
one priority. "
Another consideration for OR leadership
is educating staff on everyone's
role, so everyone's actions are understood
and can be shared as needed. A
recent study (Rosen et al) showed that
patients who received care from teams
that had more clarity of everyone's role
experienced lower levels of postoperative
pain, shorter length of stays, and
higher postoperative mobility.
