were not aware of, according to a 2022
Kaiser Family Foundation report. Out-ofnetwork
care is more costly and often
denied by insurers, leaving patients and
their families responsible for bills that
can be hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Two in three adults say they worry
about surprise medical bills.
The No Surprises Act (NSA), effective
January 1, 2022, was created by
the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) to address surprise
bills that patients may get after receiving
care from out-of-network providers.

Price transparency in surgical settings
Under the NSA's Requirements Related
to Surprise Billing Part I provision,
providers and facilities are required to
send uninsured or self-pay patients a
good faith estimate (GFE) detailing the
charges they can expect for scheduled
visits, tests, supplies, drugs, or other
services based on the expected course
of treatment. With this law, CMS encourages
consumers to shop around,
comparing services and costs.
CMS also added a requirement that
costs from co-facilities and co-providers
be included in the GFEs, which was
scheduled to take effect on January 1,
2023; however,
it has been delayed

with no future implementation date.

look to cybersecurity insurance
as cyberattacks rise
hen a hospital is hit by a cyberattack,
it can bring severe
consequences-staff denied
access to patient records, network
shutdowns, closure, multimillion dollar
restoration costs, and a blow to the
healthcare system's reputation.
In April 2023, the Murfreesboro
Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter in Tennessee
was forced to close 11 locations
for nearly 2 weeks after a cyberattack-
leaving patients without access to services
and unable to fill prescriptions.
St. Margaret's Health-Peru, a hospital
in Illinois, abruptly announced that it
W
would close in January 2023, in part
because of a cyberattack that affected
its billing and payment system. At Johnson
Memorial Health in central Indiana,
criminals deployed ransomware
minutes after gaining access to the
hospital's IT system. Staff lost access
to medical records, nurses scrambled
to share orders and lab notes via runners
and handwritten notes, and fetal
monitors stopped working, requiring
nurses to stand watch over infants to
detect any sudden changes. A network
shutdown of Universal Health Services,
