of severe pain after surgery and all of
its negative repercussions, " concluded
the authors.
Generative AI
In this issue of OR Manager, a new
term is introduced: generative AI. According
to another STAT News article,
this one from May 2023, generative AI
performs " the same kind of auto-complete
that has been built into...email
and tools like automated language
translation for many years. " It identifies
and reproduces patterns by predicting
the probability of which word will come
next to achieve a reasonable answer.
Similarly to NLP, generative AI
shows promise in eliminating manual
data entry, and value in its efficiency
in performing " many tasks faster,
cheaper-and sometimes better-than
humans. " As such, the healthcare industry
is reportedly " racing to incorporate
generative AI tools into their product
pipelines and IT systems. "
While the article does include some
cautionary language-mainly to do with
the technology growing beyond experts'
ability to maintain it, its performative
quality, and privacy concerns with
feeding patient imaging and electronic
health records into it-much like NLP,
there are many ways to use generative
AI in the surgical department. Just
recently, a May 2023 News9 article discussed
how researchers in China used
generative AI to reconstruct brains in
3D for robotic surgeries, though " there
are limitations when it comes to using
these reconstruction methods in real
surgical procedures. "
A July 2023 article published in the
Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery
expanded on how generative AI
is being used in the specialty, as well
as on its shortcomings. Beneficial applications
include " improving surgical

precision, accuracy of diagnoses, and
treatment planning, " while " potential
perils include biases or inaccuracies in
the data used to train the algorithms,
over-reliance on generative AI without
human oversight, patient privacy concerns,
and ethical implications of using
AI in medical decision-making. "
AI and its many branches of even
more specialized technology will remain
a much debated topic. Healthcare leaders-in
particular, perioperative leaders-will
most likely see the need to be
trained, maintain knowledge, and stay
current on AI usage in healthcare to do
their jobs effectively and find success
for their departments. OR Manager
