urgeons often are eager to acquire
the newest technology, particularly
right after attending a
conference with a vendor-packed exhibit
hall. How can OR leaders weigh surgeon
demands with organizational cost
constraints to ensure they meet patient
needs while being fiscally responsible?
The first step is to acknowledge the
complexity of the process.

OR. To address this dilemma, an OR recycling
performance improvement committee
was formed at Massachusetts
General Hospital (MGH) in Boston.
The multidisciplinary committee
members collaborated in evaluating processes
to reduce waste transport to
landfills, increase waste transport to
recycling and reprocessing, and reduce
waste at the point of care. Over time,
they had many successes and gained
support from the perioperative staff,
materials management, waste management,
environmental services, and
other areas in the hospital, says Patrice
M. Osgood, DNP, RN, CNOR, NE-BC, associate
chief nurse, MGH perioperative
and GI endoscopy services.
Despite recent challenges related to
changes in international recycling policies,
staff members continue to work
toward implementing the changes that
are needed for a sustainable system
and waste reduction.
