Older people have better mental
health, life satisfaction
This study by researchers from Finland
finds that depressive symptoms in 75and
80-year-olds have decreased; they
are more satisfied with life overall than
those at the same age 30 years ago.
Two independent cohorts of Finnish
men and women aged 75 and 80 were
analyzed in 1989-1990 (617 individuals
born in 1910 and 1914) and in
2017-2018 (794 individuals born between
1938-1939 and 1942-1943).
The results showed:
* The later-born men and women overall
reported fewer depressive symptoms
and better life satisfaction during
their life course so far. However,
earlier-born men displayed greater
satisfaction with their lives at age
80 than today's 80-year-old men.
* The differences between cohorts remained
significant after education,
social resources, self-rated health,
and functional performance control.
* The later-born individuals exhibited
markedly improved physical and cognitive
capabilities than the earlierborn
individuals at the same age.
The researchers concluded that positive
feelings and lack of depressive
symptoms predict longevity and better
health and functioning.

Mycobacteria infections after
total joints traced to OR nurse
This investigation by the Kentucky Department
for Public Health and Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention of
eight cases of rapidly growing mycobacteria
(RGM) infections in a Kentucky
hospital after total joint replacement
procedures found that the presence of
a particular OR nurse was significantly
associated with the infections.
Environmental sampling at the
nurse's home identified an outdoor hot
tub as the likely source. The hot tub
reservoir was eliminated, and hospital
policies were revised to correct lapses
in infection control procedures.

Preventing light source-related
burns during surgical procedures
The Joint Commission, on April 10,
released a new Quick Safety advisory
on preventing patient burns from light
sources used during laparoscopic or
arthroscopic procedures.
Burns from these light sources can
go unnoticed because they typically do
not produce smoke or charring, even of
surgical drapes, The Joint Commission
says. The Quick Safety details how light
sources can cause burns and provides
recommended safety actions and resources.
Safety actions include:
* Educating surgeons on the importance
of handling laparoscopes and
arthroscopes safely
* Implementing system changes to
minimize the risk of patient burns
* Labeling light sources with warnings
that they can ignite drapes and other
materials
* Completing all cable connections before
turning on the light source
* Keeping illuminated light cords away
from drapes, patient skin, personnel
skin, and any flammable material.

Daily
steps linked to mortality
In this study, researchers from the University
of California, Los Angeles, and
Kyoto University, Japan, found that the
number of days per week US adults
took 8,000 steps or more was linked to
a lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular
mortality at 10 years.
Of 3,101 participants, per week,
632 (20.4%) did not take 8,000 steps
or more; 532 (17.2%) took 8,000 steps
or more 1 to 2 days; and 1,937 (62.5%)
took 8,000 steps or more 3 to 7 days.
Over the 10-year follow-up, there
were 439 (14.2%) deaths from all
causes and 148 (5.3%) deaths from
cardiovascular disease. After adjusting
for potential confounders, compared
with those who did not take 8,000
steps or more any day of the week:
* 10-year all-cause mortality risk was
14.9% lower among those who took
8,000 steps or more 1 to 2 days per
week and 16.5% lower for those who
took 8,000 steps or more 3 to 7
days per week.
* 10-year cardiovascular mortality
risk was 8.1% lower among those
who took 8,000 steps or more 1
to 2 days per week and 8.4% lower
among those who took 8,000 or
more steps 3 to 7 days per week.
The protective association leveled
off when individuals took sufficient daily
steps for 3 days or more per week.
The findings suggest that for those
who have difficulties exercising regularly
because of work and/or family obligations,
taking recommended steps a couple
days per week can have meaningful
health benefits, the researchers say.

Annual
survey finds new grads
hopeful about job market
Despite challenging economic times,
many new college graduates say they
feel optimistic about finding employment,
according to the annual survey
" 2023 State of the Graduate Report "
from Monster.
Of 1,000 new and impending college
graduates included in the survey, 74%
feel concerned about economic conditions.
However, 88% are still confident
they will receive a job offer soon. This is
up from 81% last year.
Monster CEO Scott Gutz says that
although new graduates are willing to
settle in some areas, 62% say salary is
the most important and 73% want flexible
or hybrid work schedules that allow
them to work remotely from anywhere.
The biggest challenge for both employers
and new graduates will be balancing
candidates' expectations with what employers
are able to offer.
