* Reduce tasks that do not improve
patient care. Some clinician burnout
is related to laws, regulations,
and policies, and those that contribute
little or no value to patient care
should be eliminated.
* Improve usability and relevance of
health information technology (IT).
Health IT, including electronic health
records, should be as user-friendly
and easy to operate as possible,
and clinicians and patients should
make decisions together.
* Reduce stigma and improve burnout
recovery services. Many clinicians
do not report burnout. State
legislative bodies should facilitate
access to EAPs, peer support programs,
and mental health providers
without the information being admissible
in malpractice litigation.

* Create a national research agenda
on clinician well-being. By the end
of 2020, federal agencies-including
the Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality, the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health, the
Health Resources and Services Administration,
and the US Department
of Veterans Affairs-should develop
a coordinated research agenda on
clinician burnout. The research should
focus on the drivers of burnout across
career and life stages for different
types of clinicians, implications for
workers and patients, and potential
systems-level interventions to improve
clinician and learner well-being.
The WHO has designated 2020 as
the International Year of the Nurse
and the Midwife to celebrate the work
of nurses and midwives, highlight
the challenging conditions they often
face, and advocate for increased
investments in this workforce. Programs
like those described in this
article align with this recognition and
may play an increasing role in helping
nurses and other healthcare providers
survive and thrive. ✥
