the leader can identify solutions
to correct the missed step. These
corrections may include re-education
or providing the correct tools, either in
the decontamination area for debris removal
or in the assembly area for quality
inspection.
Once identified, the leader can develop
solutions to alleviate missteps in
the future. To contribute to a better communication
culture and a sustainable
solution, the SP leader should inform
the SP team, the OR service leader, and
end-users. Communicating to the endusers
should include all customers of
SP-not only the OR team, but also the
clinic, ambulatory surgery center, and
off-site surgical teams. This communication
helps to increase the customer
satisfaction rate and ultimately ensures
a team-centered approach.
Department culture rule of
thumb
In the OR, there is a rule of thumb: " If
in doubt, throw it out. " This saying pertains
to a commitment to sterility and
is known as a " sterile conscience. " The
whole team is constantly working with
this code of conduct throughout the
procedure. It helps to keep each other
within guidelines and offers an approach
to the work ethic that helps to ensure
the best outcomes for the patient.
For SP, the daily goal is to process
all instruments on staging shelves. The
rule of thumb is to deliver clean, sterile,
and complete instrumentation to endusers
and ensure sterility for patients.
Often, this rule proves difficult due to
the siloed processes, lack of staff, volume
of OR requests, and staff turnover.
According to Pure Processing, SP can
instill sustainability and consistent unform
care practices, known as the patient
promise, by " department leaders
providing opportunities to ensure a welltrained
staff, anticipate future surgical
load, and provide the equipment necessary
for ideal technician productivity. "
