analysis surveys, in 2021, CCI gathered
race and ethnicity data from all certification
examination test takers and
standardized the data gathered from
post-examination surveys to match the
categories established by the job analysis
surveys.
For the race/ethnicity of our test takers,
the three largest groups amongst
the 2021 CNOR test takers (n=3,903)
were white (58%), Asian (19%), Hispanic/Latino
(6%), and African American/Black
(6%). The post-examination
data for the CFPN-KBT test takers
(n=301) shows us that these test takers
are like CNOR test takers, with the
largest segment identifying as white
(64%), then Asian (10%), Hispanic/Latino
(5%), and African American/Black
(4%). In the AORN salary survey, the
three largest groups by race/ethnicity
were those who identified as white
(85%), Asian (7%), and Hispanic (7%).
Data point #4: Nursing
experience
The 2019 CNOR job analysis survey

revealed a wealth of experience among
the respondents. See Figure 4 for the
results. The largest group of respondents
had 20 years or more of experience,
and a quarter reported between
11 and 20 years. Perioperative nurses,
once they attain proficiency in the specialty,
tend to have long careers in the
specialty because the perioperative skill

Notably, the 2021 AORN salary survey
gathered data on the correlation of factors
such as certification status and
salary levels. The authors report that
certified nurses earned $2,500 more
per year than their non-certified counterparts.
This pay differential, while found
in 2021, has not been consistently
found in past surveys. Only 38% of the
respondents reported that their facility
paid certified nurses more. AORN
also reported that the ratio of certified
nurses in a work setting increases for
the nurses who identify as leaders and
managers, which is consistent with CCI
data.
In OR Manager's September 2021
issue, Saver reported that about 3/4 of
respondents of the 2021 career/salary
survey had trouble hiring experienced
perioperative nurses, a significant
increase from the two prior surveys.
Saver also noted that only slightly more
