Countering bullying through teamwork,
increased awareness
ullying is a serious problem
seen in all aspects of life-at
home, in school, and in the
workplace. Anyone can be a bully,
but bullying is often carried out by
those who are threatened by or view
themselves as superior to others. However,
the younger generations, who are
slowly taking over the job market, are
adept at recognizing signs of bullying
and quick to reject organizations that
do not address or seek to correct it.
In the OR, bullying can harm nurses'
physical and psychological well-being.
It can occur from and to any staff
member, for example, from a physiB
cian
to a nurse or a medical professional
to a surgical technologist. The
act of bullying can come from an individual
or a group of people; but the
type of bullying that occurs most often
in the OR setting is peer to peer-
a type of bullying also referred to as
lateral violence. Educating OR staff on
the patterns of bullying behavior is a
step in the right direction, but establishing
accountability and strategies for
prevention are key to reducing or eliminating
bullying in the workplace.

Salary/Career Survey
Survey: Dips in job satisfaction,
engagement may relate to pandemic
O
ver the past year, job satisfaction
of OR leaders as well as
staff and physician engagement
have all eroded, according to the 2021
OR Manager Salary/Career Survey.
Although more than two-thirds (67%)
of respondents rate their current jobs
or positions favorably, that is down
from the 77% seen in 2020 and 70%
in 2019. Only 18% of respondents say
that they are " completely satisfied, "
compared to nearly a third last year.
Human resources
OR leaders report a favorable level
of engagement for slightly more than
half of both staff (53%) and physicians
(55%), down from the 70% and 65%,
respectively, seen in 2020. The continuing
pandemic may have played
a role in these results, although the
percentages are only slightly higher
than those from 2019 (51% of staff
and 49% of physicians). It may be that
an engagement surge caused by the
