More health systems embrace
dual roles for C-suite executives
Stacking additional responsibilities and
titles atop pre-existing leadership responsibilities
is becoming more common
among health system executives,
according to a January 24 report in
Becker's Hospital Review. Not including
the most obvious overlapping pairings,
such as chief medical officer and chief
medical informatics officers, the most
common parings include:
* chief quality officer and chief compliance
officer
* chief nursing officer and chief operating
officer
* general counsel or chief legal officer
and chief compliance officer
* chief medical officer and chief quality
officer.
Reasons for dual roles include improving
efficiency and fully leveraging
people's skills, such as when a chief
quality officers take on compliance functions
or a chief legal officer plays a dual
role as a chief human resources officer.
The practice is said to be particularly
popular among smaller organizations
with fewer executives.

Hospital
institutes $100,000
bonuses to improve nurse
retention
Palomar Health, a hospital system in
Escondido, California, reports improvement
in nurse retention after instituting
$100,000 sign-on bonuses for new
nurses and $100,000 retention bonuses
to current staff paid over a threeyear
period. Becker's Hospital Review
reported the news on January 17.
The $100,000 bonuses were instituted
in March 2023 with the goal of
bringing in nurses who would stay, and
reduce the hospital's reliance on contract
labor. They chose the three-year
time frame reasoning that nurses who
stayed for three years would be more
likely to remain.
The new program has already seen

Perioperative
nurses experience
high rates of disruptive behavior
Healthcare institutions urgently need
intervention strategies to reduce disruptive
behavior toward perioperative
nurses, according to a January 9 report
in the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing.
The recommendation follows a crosssectional
survey designed to " investigate
the prevalence, characteristics,
causes, consequences, and predictors
of and responses to disruptive behavior
toward nurses in the perioperative
arena. " Conducted in March 2020, the
survey recruited nurses online to report
data on disruptive behavior over the preceding
months as well as sociodemographic
and environmental information.
In total, 82.1% of participants experienced
disruptive behavior, mostly
from surgeons. The most commonly reported
behaviors were verbal aggression
and the assignment of overwhelming
workloads, which respondents indicated
were caused mostly by interpersonal issues.
Although nearly half those experiHackers
use stolen identities,
IT help desk to redirect hospital
funds
In a sophisticated new scheme, hackers
are stealing the identity of hospital
employees in financial roles-such
as revenue cycle employees-and then
reaching out to the hospitals' IT help
desk in order to reset passwords, receive
access codes, and redirect funds.
The American Hospital Association
(AHA) sent out an alert January 12
about the social engineering scheme,
which they said is being orchestrated
by a foreign-based threat actor who receives
multi-factor identification codes
from IT staff using the stolen hospital
employee information. Once the password
was reset, the hacker was able to
then use the hospital employee's email
account to change payment instructions
with payment processors and divert payments
to fraudulent US bank accounts,
and ultimately overseas.
The AHA encourages hospitals to
be vigilant about this latest hacking
method and to take steps to prevent
becoming compromised. This includes
implementing strict IT help desk protocols,
including contacting the supervisor
of an employee making these password
reset requests, or even, as one large
health system did, requiring employees
to make such requests in person.
The AHA adds that organizations who
are subject to any type of payment diversion
scheme should immediately notify
their financial institution and the FBI at
www.ic3.gov, which can help recover
the diverted payments if notification is
made within 72 hours.
