Capital budget responsibilities also have evolved. For example,
only 28% of respondents were responsible for a capital
budget of $2 million or more in 2018. By 2023, that figure
had risen to 40%. The trends in capital and operating budgets
likely reflect OR leaders' increasing responsibility.

Job satisfaction
Since 2015, participants have been asked to `rank` their satisfaction
with different aspects of their work, including current
job, the level of support from their bosses, top leadership,
and total compensation, on a scale of 1 to 5. In the line graph
in the next column, " favorable " indicates a choice of 4 or 5
and " unfavorable " indicates a choice of 1 or 2.
OR leaders have consistently been most satisfied with
their current jobs, although the percentage has dipped in
recent years. In 2015, 75% of respondents had favorable satisfaction.
In 2021, the percentage dropped to 64%, likely as
a result of the pandemic, before rebounding to 72% in 2022.
Unfortunately, in 2023, the percentage dropped again, down
to 64%. The percentage of those ranking their current jobs as
unfavorable has been in the single digits, except for 11% in
2021 and 2023.
The percentage of those ranking support from their bosses
as favorable ranged from 61% in 2017 to 70% in 2021. However,
favorable ratings for top leadership were much lower,
ranging from 49% in 2018 to 58% in 2015 and 2016. The
percentages of respondents ranking both as unfavorable have
been fairly consistent over the years.
Among the four categories discussed here, total compensation
received the fewest favorable rankings. Only 42% of
respondents rated total compensation as favorable in 2023,
compared to 51% in 2022 and 2015. The 2020 survey
showed the highest percentage of respondents rating total
compensation as favorable (60%).
Unfavorable ratings for total compensation were also
higher than unfavorable ratings for the other three categories.
Ranging from 20% in 2015 and 19% in 2019 to 18% in 2020,
26% in 2021, 24% in 2022, and 25% in 2023, these increasingly
higher ratings coincide with the pandemic.

OR leader profile
The average age of OR leader survey respondents has consistently
been in the 50s, except for 2022, when it was 49.
In 2023, the average age was 51 years, compared to 55 in
2014, the oldest average over the past decade. In contrast,
the average age for RNs in general is 46 years, according to
the National Nursing Workforce Survey.
The slightly lower average ages of the past couple of surveys
correlate with the data on overall years of experience as
an OR leader. Since 2020, when the question was first asked,
the percentage of respondents with at least 26 years of experience
has decreased from 23% in 2020 to 17% in 2023. Over
the same time, the percentage of respondents reporting 1 to 5
years of experience increased from 16% to 20%.

Most OR leaders who responded to the past 10 surveys
reported working at community rather than teaching hospitals.
Earlier surveys show higher percentages of community-based
OR leaders, including 72% of respondents in 2014 and 73%
in 2015. The lowest was 52% in 2020. Percentages for the
2021, 2022, and 2023 surveys were 60%, 63%, and 66%,
respectively. The percentage of those working in a teaching
hospital has been increasing in recent years, from 23% in
2020 to 31% in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
