Cultivating relationships, seeking out learning opportunities, and
thinking creatively were prominent themes among the recommendations
OR Manager solicited from seasoned business managers. Here
is a sampling of what they had to say:
" Work to cultivate meaningful relationships, and seek out mentors
and sponsors. Access to informed individuals can drive successful
change. Appreciating the mission of the institution and what is important
to the operation provides a framework for how you frame opportunities.
Don't be afraid to start small, prove a concept, and get early
wins to drive momentum and buy-in for larger success. "

" Take the time to be with people working on the front line, and
get to know their workflows. Even if you don't have the training to do
their work, observe the work and get to know what they find fulfilling,
along with their challenges. If you don't have a clinical background,
take a medical terminology class to learn what terms mean and how
to pronounce them. And understand how your EHR (electronic health
record) works as much as you can; you want to leverage it as much
as possible. "

Building relationships requires an understanding of the organization's
key strategic priorities and how perioperative services fits into
the overall strategy. Work hard to build trust in others and foster

those in finance, human resources, facilities management, and
the legal department-you never know when you might need their
expertise or assistance. You are more likely to get valuable feedback
and assistance from others when you have done the same for them in
their time of need. Not only does this lead to a higher level of fulfillment
and connection in your role, but you will learn things from the
healthcare environment and your organization from others that you
can never learn from your formal education and training.
Understanding operations inside and out helps you contribute to
better operational and financial performance. If you don't understand
operations, you cannot effectively negotiate contracts, facilitate new
business, and strategically plan for the future. "

" Meet as many people as possible in your organization-you'll
need the support of outside departments to accomplish your goals.
It's also helpful to serve as a 'translator' between surgeons and the
hospital's leadership. To do this successfully, you need to be able to
look at issues from both lenses. For example, you need to understand
how operational decisions will impact surgeons. "
