Future of the business manager role
When asked to look ahead, several business managers and perioperative
nurse leaders focused on containing costs, finding opportunities
for growth, and using data to drive decision-making. Here are some
of those responses:

to perform data analysis, new contractual relationships,
and reduction of waste. Controlling labor
expense through FTE (full-time equivalent) management
and more robust contract labor evaluation
and retention tools will be of utmost importance.
Likewise, business managers may be
called upon to find creative solutions to improve
revenue through effective charge capture, predictive
scheduling, and business development. Business managers can
help create a framework for decision making that leads to a more
objective process for allocating block time, purchasing equipment, reducing
spending, and generating new revenue, with the ultimate goal
of improving quality and financial performance to achieve strategic
priorities. "

" The business manager of the future needs to be able to bring
actionable insights from objective data to the leaders in the institution
who can affect the operation. Decisions should be supported by
objective information aligned with a patient-driven narrative. Success
comes from the alignment of the information with the key subject
matter experts. "

" The bulk of our decision making on a day-to-day basis is driven by
data. Utilizing AI (artificial intelligence) platforms with predictive analytics
is the future for this role and will increase efficiencies. Technolfrom
only 34% in 2019 to 55% in 2023. Although only one
fourth of business managers were responsible for the surgical
services information system in 2019, that percentage
also has increased over the years, with the highest proportion
(44%) reported in the 2022 survey.
Demographics
Most organizations do not require the business manager
to have a clinical background. For example, only one-third
required clinical experience in 2023. This is consistent with
earlier surveys: 28% required a clinical background in 2014
and 29% in 2015.

can effectively manage budgeting, revenue cycles, and cost optimization,
and who understand healthcare regulatory requirements,
reimbursement models, and insurance billing intricacies. Business
managers will need to be well-versed in health information systems,
data analytics, and electronic health records to optimize financial
processes and improve decision making. Adaptability and strategic
planning to align financial goals with mission and vision, as well as
identifying opportunities for growth and cost saving measures, will
continue to be a major focus. Finally, business managers will work
closely with the clinical leadership as well as administration and executive
teams to meet operational as well as financial goals. I believe
that the business manager role within surgical services will become
very specialized with an emphasis on technological proficiency, valuebased
care, and strategic financial planning. "

will use data to help make decisions and answer questions, such as

expense reduction, procedure variation reduction, surgeon on-boarding,
and capital equipment assessment. "
