ences as well. Carotid stenosis, when
the large blood vessels on the neck become
narrow, occurs more frequently in
men but is more likely to trigger stroke
in women. Additionally, men respond
better to surgery to repair these blood
vessels, perhaps because their blood
vessels are larger. Although men and
women have the same risk factors for
heart failure-a long-term condition in
which the heart stops pumping blood
as effectively-women are more prone
to developing it, and it leads to higher
rates of hospitalization and death in
women.
Ensuring sex differences are better
understood, better recognized by
the public, better diagnosed, and better
treated requires improved education
for both clinicians and the broader
population, says Dr Merz at at Cedars
Sinai. A survey found that despite the
prevalence of heart disease, which is
the leading cause of death for women,
just 22% of primary care physicians and
42% of cardiologists felt prepared to address
the risk factors in women.
Similarly, despite public awareness
campaigns, many women are not aware
that,
in women, heart disease often
presents with more subtle symptoms
than the chest-clutching " Hollywood
heart attack. " These symptoms can
include sweating, dizziness, fatigue,
shortness of breath, nausea, and even
jaw pain. It is important that women
learn to recognize these symptoms and
advocate for EKG testing, experts say.
" If you pay attention to these additional
symptoms and don't call them atypical,
or 'women symptoms'-we not only
help two thirds of women to recognize
these symptoms but also one third of
men, " Dr Merz says.
Growing awareness can increase the
likelihood of caregivers finding and taking
advantage of innovations that can
benefit women, including new surgical
techniques. For example, using noninvasive
transcatheter aortic valve replacement
as an alternative to surgical aortic

valve replacement has been shown to
improve survival rates for women.
With 26.8 million Americans suffering
from cardiovascular disease and
nearly 700,000 people dying from it
in the US each year, the potential for
such innovations to move the needle on
improving outcomes is huge. And yet,
cardiovascular care is just one of many
specialties where awareness is slowly
evolving toward action. For the healthcare
sector as a whole, the potential
benefits of closing the gender gap are
