Nurse leaders, vendors must collaborate
effectively
s working with a healthcare vendor
a necessary evil? For leaders in the
perioperative space, where vendors
abound, it may be tempting to answer
" yes. " The relationship between vendors
and nurse leaders is a delicate
balance between give and take, but
sometimes the take seems to outweigh
the give.
I
Nonetheless, OR leaders should
always remember that healthcare vendors
are supposed to be partners.
In fact, we are united with vendors
in shared accountability for patient
safety. The more open and collaborative
our relationship, the better the balance
between give and take-and the
better the outcomes for the patients.
Sharing the responsibility
Inside the OR, the shared accountability
for patient safety unifying both
sides of the healthcare provider-vendor
coin becomes starkly apparent. Vendor
representatives are often present
during surgery, observing and even
lending feedback to ensure products
are used correctly.
This is not to suggest patient safety
is a vendor's sole motivation. On the
contrary, they are often fighting dozens
of competitors for the attention
of perioperative leadership, and that
may lead them to be somewhat pushy.
Still, the need to market their products
is not mutually exclusive with caring
about patients. Most vendors truly believe
in the product they are there to
promote. How well the line is drawn
between the business side of the relationship
and the safety partnership-
and how well that partnership works-
often depends on the healthcare provider's
perception and attitude.
Christopher Kunney, eFACHDM,
CPHIMS, MSMOT, managing partner
and a fellow at the American College
of Health Data Management, put it
well when he wrote that some healthcare
providers " have the perception
vendors are attempting to take adwww.ormanager.com
vantage
of the hospital's limited resources
and not committed to delivering
on their promises. " The potential
problem with this perception is
most vendors bring with them tools
and knowledge that are " critical to the
overall quality of healthcare, as the
products and services they provide
impact patient outcomes and experiences. "
Cutting
through the noise
Does it get tiresome to listen to product
pitches over and over? Sure. But
a wise perioperative leader knows how
to cut through the noise and not ignore
the value behind vendors' pitches.
A few tips for new managers:
* Know your budget. If you don't have
the money for that multimillion dollar
capital expense, then you don't
have the money. It could pay to be
more selective about which vendor
conversations to have.
* Focus on education. Just because
the money isn't there today doesn't
mean it won't be there tomorrow.
Meanwhile, it pays to be informed
of what new technology, equipment,
and/or service is out there.
Learning new things isn't a waste
of time.
* Plan ahead. Enter every interaction
knowing what you want to get out
of it.
If you seek only education,
will you act on what you learn? How
could new knowledge enrich your
practice? If you are considering
buying what the vendor is pitching,
what do you need to know first?
Have you built a timeline for implementation?
Will you need a trial
period? Finalizing the purchase is
only the first-and often the easiest-step.
*
Get the appropriate buy-in. Odds
are nurse leaders will not be the
primary users of a new product. Did
you get the necessary input before
making the purchase? Did the staff
ask for it? Will it attract top-tier tal
