Editorial
ent? How will it make things better?
The most important thing to note
is you are not alone. Many organizations
have stepped up and issued formal
guidelines about the appropriate
conduct for vendor relationships. Every
nurse leader should know and follow
these guidelines.
Proper relationships
First, find out what vendor interaction
policies are in place at your facility.
Are there guidelines that restrict staff
accepting gifts from vendors? The Children's
Hospital of Philadelphia has a
fairly comprehensive vendor interaction
policy that effectively shows the
facility's role at setting standards (see
References).
Next, consider any safety risks. Has
the representative been vetted? If they
claim to be a subject matter expert, do
they have the proper credentials? Do
they have nurse educators on staff?
Have their products been tested? Can
they provide adequate support if the
product malfunctions? Such questions
can help to determine whether a vendor's
credibility holds up to the promise
of their pitch.
Finally, ensure appropriate policies
and procedures are in place for managing
the presence of vendor representatives
in the surgical department. Have
lockers been assigned? Do representatives
have the proper clearance to
enter
Education from vendors is
valuable
Managing relationships with vendors is
also important to the editorial staff of
OR Manager. Like perioperative leaders,
we recognize the value of highly
specialized expertise that is specific
to a product or service and that healthcare
providers do not always possess.
Like said leaders, we are committed to
pushing past promotion to benefit from
this valuable education-and ensuring
our readers do, too.
A few examples appear in this issue
of OR Manager. Beginning on page 6, a
representative of PDI Healthcare, which
specializes in infection prevention, outlines
the evolution and benefits of antiseptic
nasal decolonization. On page
8, an article from supplier Henry Schein
emphasizes the importance of hand
hygiene and cleaning, particularly for
ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). On
page 10, another example highlights
what not to overlook in the construction
of a new ASC.
As healthcare evolves, so will relationships
with vendor partners. Along
the way, perioperative leaders must
never lose sight of what matters most:
continuing education and patient
safety. ORM
the facility? Are sterile gowns
available for them, and if so, what distinguishes
them from healthcare staff?
Having regulatory resources on hand
is also a good idea. For instance, federal
regulators including the Department
of Health and Human Services Office
of Inspector General, Department
of Justice, and Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services have guidelines
regarding which vendors are prohibited
from receiving reimbursements. Ultimately,
providers are responsible-and
could be held accountable-for what
happens on their premises.
