Emergence Agitation in the PACU
4:00 pm-5:00 pm
Emergence agitation is a phenomenon that develops during the
transition from unconsciousness to complete wakefulness after
surgery that can lead to sporadic incidents of violence. A strong
safety culture is essential to secure a uniform and nonviolent
environment for patients and PACU nurses. It is essential to
implement a standardized model for individuals who experience
this phenomenon. Safety issues need to be addressed for patients
recovering and staff members taking care of them. The phenomenon
expends staff resources, and the situation can cause stress for
those involved. Collaboration is strategic to develop and implement
a standardized care model. Awareness on safety issues is vital to
ensure optimum care for vulnerable patients in the PACU.
Learning objectives:
* Bring awareness on emergence agitation to other disciplines.
* Educate nurses on the safety issues of emergence agitation.
* Optimize interdisciplinary collaboration on this phenomenon.
