THE BIG PICTURE: U.S. Wind Power Installations
An estimated 70,808 wind turbines with a total rated capacity of 128,274 MW were installed in 44 states
across the U.S. plus Guam and Puerto Rico between 1981 and the fourth quarter of 2021, a U.S. government
database shows. Wind today represents the fourth-largest generating resource in the U.S. behind coal, gas,
and nuclear. But though growth projections are optimistic, new installations are soaring unevenly across the
nation. Circle sizes in the following set of graphics represent rated project capacity, and colors show companies
