DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. This article notes that trauma is becoming a critical public health issue and that minority
status, low socioeconomic status, and low educational achievement are additional
risk factors. Reflecting on your own program, what risk factors might be present when
addressing trauma? How has your program addressed burnout, compassion fatigue,
and secondary trauma?
2. The article offers a few reasons for the unexpected data: a decrease in compassion
satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress over the course of a semester.
What explanations make the most sense to you and why?
3. The authors recommend that institutions of higher education apply trauma content
in trainings for its resident assistants. How has your program done this? How can you
elevate trauma content in your RA training?
4. The RAs who participated in this study had trauma content in both their orientation and
staff meetings, and it was discussed to some extent during supervision. What are some
of the other ways that trauma content can be incorporated in the program?
5. What does your program do to follow up with RAs who experience major incidents and
possible trauma while in the role?
6. How has this article changed the way you think about trauma and the RA experience?
