Minoritized RAs
LIMITATIONS
There are two main limitations in the present study. First, this research included a sample
of RAs who did and did not share the same minoritized identities. While findings
indicate trends and categories consistent across participant interviews, caution should
be used when transferring these findings to all RAs with any minoritized identity.
We encourage readers to draw from newer research studies to tailor the broad-based
implications for practice discussed in this article in order to meet the needs of the
specific identities represented on their staffs. Second, though RAs in our study spoke
positively of how the RA position enhanced their understandings of their multiple
identities, it is important to note that not all RAs with minoritized identities will gain
enriched conceptualizations of their multiple identities through the RA position. While
other research we have conducted with this dataset demonstrates how this group of
RAs contended with identity-based microaggressions in other campus contexts (see
Schuster & Stalker, 2020), data in this study was not able include perspectives of RAs
who did not have this developmental identity experience because RAs in our sample
did not express those views.
CONCLUSION
This article reported a qualitative research study describing the lived experiences of
resident assistants with minoritized identities. The findings from this research reveal
that an identity-affirming microclimate has strong potential to enrich the RA experience
for students with minoritized identities by enhancing identity building and capacity
building as well as empowering RAs to more effectively mentor others. The
findings from this study can be used practically across residence life units as they
continue to develop impactful residential communities.
