MARTIN PEARLMAN first began
performing with a group of
musical friends as Banchetto Musicale
during the 1973-74 season, nobody-
certainly not Pearlman-could imagine
the Baroque performance world as it
exists today. "It was 1973," Pearlman
says. "Those were the days before
anyone was told to make long range
plans, and I had no idea where it was
going to lead."
It was a time when recordings on
period instruments were hard to come

one of the foremost period instrument
America's first period instrument
orchestra, Boston Baroque got
its start with a different
name in what now seems
like a far away era. But all
the ingredients were there
for long-term success.

HEN
orchestras in the world. Founded and
still directed by Martin Pearlman, the
group has more than two dozen recordings, first on Telarc and now on Linn
Records, and three Grammy nominations. It has done modern-day premieres
of works by Mozart and others, and performs an opera every season. Boston
Baroque was the first period instrument
ensemble to perform at Carnegie Hall,
the first period orchestra at the Casals
Festival in Puerto Rico, has performed at
Ravinia, in Disney Hall, and at Tanglewood, and has toured in Europe.
"Playing on period instruments was
just getting started," Pearlman recalls,
thinking back to the late '60s. "There
were just a few period instrument groups
starting up, mainly in Europe. Concentus Musicus Wien had been established
