V
ince Scott is the president of Midland Instruments in Perkinsfield, ontario, Canada. A graduate of Canadore College’s avionics program, his first job was at Perimeter Airlines Ltd. in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. From there, he left to open an avionics shop for a competing airline, Air Manitoba. Recently, Scott moved back to ontario, and started a new company, Midland Instruments, with his two partners. He was elected to the AEA board of directors in 2009, representing the Canadian membership. Recently, Jeb burnside, Avionics News contributor, discussed a variety of topics with Scott to learn more about his work at Midland Instruments and his role with the AEA.
How did you get involved with the avionics business? During my last two summers in high school in the late 1980s, I got a job working on the DEW (distant early warning) line, way up in the Arctic, back when the Russians were coming. I was working on an environmental clean-up crew and making such good money that I thought about working there full time to pay for college. but, I’m 6 feet 8 inches tall and played basketball in high school. There was a college recruiter wanting me to play for him. So, instead of going to work full time in the fall of 1986, I went off to Canadore College in North bay, ontario. In looking at the course offerings, I wanted to go into aircraft electronics. but, it was the most difficult of the choices, so I settled on a curriculum in the arts and sciences. because I was playing basketball, the college paid my tuition by allowing me to work in the gymnasium. During the summer after my freshman year, I worked on the DEW line again. but, in the fall, I switched majors to aircraft electronics. In Canada, avionics technicians are required to have two years of college-level education before becoming licensed, plus a two-and-a-half-year apprenticeship. before I completed the program, we were actually doing bench work on mainstream general aviation equipment under tight deadlines. So, I had to quit playing basketball to focus on my avionics training in 1989. Having to make that decision was awful.
