Meet the
s a youngster, Garry Joyce enjoyed tinkering with radios and other electronics. But, it wasn’t until a Royal Air Force squadron leader made a career-oriented presentation at his school that he discovered an outlet for his interests. Upon leaving the RAF after eight years of service, Joyce went to work as an avionics technician for IAE Ltd., an avionics and maintenance shop north of London, which he and a co-worker ended up buying. As a member of AEA’s board of directors, Joyce focuses on improving the regulatory environment throughout the world and attracting new people, talents and ideas to the avionics industry. How did you get involved with the avionics industry? I always had a fascination and played around with radios as a kid, and I liked dealing with electronics. I was 13 or 14 and had no aviation background when a Royal Air Force squadron leader visited my school and gave a recruiting presentation. I liked the idea and was surprised to learn there were electronics involved with aviation. So, I researched it a bit more by visiting the local careers office and began gathering the necessary requirements to become an engineering technician. I joined the RAF in 1989. I did eight years, with first- and second-line maintenance on aircraft as diverse as the English Electric Canberra bomber to the Tornado F3. The level of training the RAF gave me was second to none. It still holds me in good stead now. I joined the RAF to do electronics, and then got the passion for aircraft and aviation. By late 1996 and early 1997, I was working in what we called third-line maintenance: fixing instruments and radios on the bench as a general technician. I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do, despite being selected for officer training. Of course, there was a woman involved, and I wanted to be closer to her. I was stationed in Northern England, and she was in Southern England. So, I left the RAF in 1997 and relocated. Where did you end up? Thankfully, the company I now own, IAE Ltd., was looking for an avionics technician. So, I joined the company, which is more of a full-service aviation business, not one restricted mainly to avionics. We were working on light general aviation aircraft, Cessna 172s and Piper PA-28s, up to King Airs and small Citations. I was doing all sorts of avionics work. By 2000, I was put into a managerial role. In 2006, the owner was looking for a way to get out of the business. My current partner and I were effectively running the company, and the owner made it clear it was ours to buy if we wanted it. My partner and I built the company, so we didn’t want it to fall into someone else’s hands. It was a fairly drawn out
