for people who can’t afford them now. In Germany, for example, the market for non-certified avionics is thriving, thanks to demand from ultralight and microlight operators. A lot of manufacturers are bringing out some great products for that market. What’s the next big thing for the AEA? I think the association does a pretty bloody good job as it is. But, I’m probably not the person to ask. Basically, the AEA should be involving itself with the manufacturers and regulatory agencies as much as they can to assist the membership throughout the world. It’s a big task, but they’re doing it well. If you had it to do all over again — military training and service, buying the business — would you do anything different? I don’t think I would. I don’t think there’s anything I’m not really happy with. I’m extremely fortunate to have taken the path I’ve taken. I probably would learn to listen a little more and not voice my opinion as much. What kind of advice might you give to someone considering aviation or avionics as a career? Getting young people into the industry is something I’m quite passionate about. There’s a real sense in the UK that if you don’t go to a university, you’ve somehow failed in obtaining an education. Most people working on the shop floor don’t need major academic qualifications. They’re hard-working engineers, bright and intelligent, but they don’t need a degree. I’ve interviewed some great people – we have a quite good apprenticeship scheme here – and they feel like they’re a failure because they’re not going to a university. And, I’m kind of banging my head against the wall,

saying, “You really don’t need to.” If someone likes tinkering with things, they can do that here. The challenge we have is attracting young people into our industry. It’s a great industry, and the products we have are fantastic. The new Garmin GTN series, with its touchscreen, is like an iPad. People see that, and it will engage them. Going back to when I was 13, if that RAF officer hadn’t come to my school, I don’t know what I’d be doing. So, they’re out there, we just have to go get them and bring them into the industry. Your role is managerial now instead of working the floor. When was the last time you crimped a wire terminal? About half an hour ago, and it was great. A Cessna 150 came in with a little wiring snag, and I decided to go fix it myself. It was brilliant, just spending half an hour with a small airplane again. But that’s very rare these days. I spend a lot of time doing design and engineering work now as well as the general day-to-day running of the business, and I don’t have much opportunity to actually do hands-on work. There’s nothing better than having a guy come in, we fix his aircraft, and he leaves the same day with a big smile on his face. The aircraft is fixed, and he didn’t have to leave it for a week. What about you personally? My wife, Sharon, and I have a 5-year-old daughter, Sophie, and a 3-year-old son, Matthew. They keep us extremely busy on the weekends. I used to have hobbies. Also, we recently moved into a new house, and every room needs something. So, that’s how I spend my spare time. q
