For the Part 23 airplane, the combination of in-panel lightning detection and some form of weather datalink can be the keys to mobility in good weather and survival in bad. Pilots have several options to combine into a single screen display the best of these two weather-awareness systems.

ncountering the hidden swirls of severe thunderstorms usually will focus one’s attention, hopefully, with a mix of urgency leveled by the calm needed to fly a plane – and flying the plane is the key to getting out alive. When such an encounter happened to me, the old Jim Croce tune titled “Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues” inexplicably popped into my head. Perhaps, it came from a feeling of being simultaneously washed and spin-dried to the stroboscopic rhythms of lightning flashes, but it has a catching tune and refrain: “Now I got them steadily depressin’, low down mind messin’, working at the car wash blues.” But, the lyrics that played on my mental iPod came out differently, and came after my nasty weather encounter finally ended, something like: “Avoiding those steadily depressing, low-down mind20

messing, flying-through-the-lightning blues.” Those lyrics stuck with me through the calm, 30-minute finale of my flight. Upon calling my wife to confirm a safe arrival, she exclaimed, “The weather had me worried – I watched it on the Weather Channel – how did you get around it?” Halfway through my tale, she interrupted my report and pointedly asked: “Is it finally time to look into lightning detection, onboard weather or something?” Yes, make that lightning detection and something. She knew that a couple of common, available, tools would have warned me of the cloud-base chaos before my encounter. The information would have prevented me from accepting a heading change the air traffic controller suggested to move around the weather blooming straight ahead. A spherics system – lightning detector, in plain English – would have shown me real-time indications of
