Tips and Guidelines to Become a Better Colleague, Leader or Employee

ou don’t have to know how to properly eat an artichoke or which one is the oyster fork in order to be a polite and considerate co-worker. In fact, much of what it takes to be an agreeable colleague is common sense. But, in the pressure cooker of most workplaces, it’s easy to forget some of the niceties of working with others. Here are some simple guidelines to serve as reminders that we’re all in this together and how to make the most of it. 1. Put the smartphone down. We have all experienced trying to talk to someone whose nose is buried

in his or her smartphone. This happens in meetings, at meals or sometimes just walking down the hall. The electronic leash can be a firm one. Emails and texts arrive all day in a constant stream. A friend of mine is principal in an advertising agency. Recently, he was making a major presentation to a client. The presentation took hours of preparation; he flew to the client, spent a night in a hotel, leaving his wife who has health issues and sons behind. He was there to give it his all. Yet, one person in the conference room sat and looked at his smartphone, texting the entire time he was speaking. It was just plain rude. Of course, business situations develop and await a prompt reply. If this is the case, tell your colleagues so they understand. Better yet, excuse yourself from the meeting until the situation is resolved. If it’s urgent, your attention is better focused outside the meeting. 2. Being busy is no excuse. Whenever anyone uses “I’m so busy” as a reason for not calling back, completing a task or generally not doing what was expected, people feel slightly insulted. Hey, we’re all busy these days. In fact, many of us are doing the jobs two or three people used to do. We all

know busy, and we’re all in the same boat. 3. Return phone calls. Have you ever returned a phone call and hear the stunned surprise by the person you’re calling back? People don’t seem eager to return calls these days. Recently, a colleague and I were reminiscing about a former co-worker who left the aviation industry. “He was a good guy and always returned a phone call,” my colleague said.

Returning phone calls will make your life easier, as well. A salesman is not going to give up – you wouldn’t want one of your salespeople to give up, would you? Your voice mail gets clogged with countless, trying-to-be-perky messages from the same people whose calls you won’t return. It’s far easier to return the call and just be bluntly honest. “We have no plans to change vendors,” or “We won’t be looking at media buys until the fourth quarter.” You’re not going to hurt anybody’s feelings by stating the truth. 4. RSVP. When you are invited to a business event, do the folks who invited you a favor and let them know whether you’ll be able to attend. Some people feel RSVPing a no will hurt the feel-
