Thousands of general aviation aircraft still fly on old generators, old mechanical regulators or both. For some aircraft, the limited output is sufficient. But, for many, the system is marginal when you add any electrical loads that are not original, such as strobes, an extra nav/comm, GPS or a glass-panel component. Changing over isn’t always easy or seamless. A modern alternator, solid-state regulator and the accompanying idiot light can amount to an extreme makeover – and an extremely smart one – for an older plane.

MODERNIZING ELECTRICALS
ne newly minted aircraft owner’s visit with an avionics shop owner proved enlightening, to say the least. In the course of a 45-minute visit, the shop owner listened quietly, made notes of the owner/pilot’s wish list, from the sublime to the refined. New navigation and communications gear, a start on a glass cockpit, WAAS GPS and all the trappings of ADSB; better interior illumination and more-noticeable exterior lighting; an audio panel to support a digital music player for the owner and passengers; and a multifunction display to augment the display of the WAAS GPS. The shop owner understood the aircraft owner’s ultimate goal: to prepare and equip the airplane to use some of the latest technology and simultaneously meet the requirements for flying in the national airspace system under NextGen, which means equipping to meet the mandate for ADS-B Out by 2020.

SPARKING NEW TOOLS IN OLDER AIRFRAMES

With finances limited, the owner planned a multipleyear, progressive upgrade versus an all-at-once makeover. Since the avionics shop already coordinated some work with the owner’s chosen maintenance shop, coordinating individual yearly steps seemed like a perfect match with annual inspections. Three inspections in three years, with the expected result a complete panel overhaul to include most of the avionics tools attractive to today’s active pilots. Despite putting all this thought into the planning, the owner/pilot missed one step, at least in the mind of the avionics shop owner. “Well, you’ve covered almost everything,” the shop owner told the owner/pilot. “What’s missing is a preparatory step: updating your airplane’s electrical system.” There was, he explained, no way the new-to-theowner’s airplane could produce power adequate for the planned panel. Throw in wiring older than the owner,
