Higher Education, Experience Give Liviu Avionics an Edge

orn in Iasi, Romania, Liviu Filimon has always had an adventuresome spirit and a drive for learning. Curious and intelligent, he earned a master’s degree in engineering in his mid-20s and a doctorate in avionics engineering from Bucharest’s Polytechnic University a decade later. “I was always passionate to know and study more about what I was doing,” said the avionics and instruments engineer. “I was working at that stage at maintaining the Puma’s autopilot. Puma was the French helicopter made under license in Romania at the time. I had the opportunity to enroll in a doctorate program and continue my education.” In 1996, Filimon left Romania with his wife and two daughters, traveled some 17,000 kilometers and landed halfway around the world in New Zealand. “We wanted to start a new life, to be in a new world,” he said. “New Zealand looked nice to us. It is an open country, nice climate, not so crowded, and has a diversity of aircraft. People are communicative, very friendly.” In March 2003, after more than seven years as avionics and instruments manager for Flightline Aviation of Auckland,

New Zealand, Filimon embarked on another adventure, starting his own company with his wife, Georgeta. Settling at Auckland’s Ardmore Airfield, Liviu and Georgeta split the company’s duties – tasks they still tend to today. Georgeta handles the finances, accounting and administrative responsibilities, while Liviu takes care of the customers’ equipment. He installs, maintains and repairs a wide variety of instruments and avionics for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft as well as provides bench service for Garmin and Bendix/King units. As a matter of policy, Filimon never refuses a project, large or small, near or far. He takes his cheerful demeanor, generous nature and immense talents on the road with his mobile workshop, visiting airfields and customer hangars anywhere in the North Island. “Many customers like that it’s easier for me to bring a mobile workshop to their hangar than for them to fly the airplane to a repair facility,” said Filimon, who has more than 28 years of experience in the industry. “We do not have overhead, so we are less expensive. Also, the work is done by a qualified engineer and not by a less-qualified or inexperienced person who needs supervision. I just collect a key
