adding new certifications to engineering equipment solutions and streamlining troubleshooting methods. Last year, Liviu Avionics and Instruments Services earned Part 145 and Part 19F approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand. The company became a member of the Aircraft Electronics Association in their first year of operation. “Part 145 is usually an attribute for bigger companies with more capabilities,” Filimon said. “When I arrived in New Zealand, I worked as the avionics and instrument shop manager in such a company for seven years. I wanted the same capabilities for my own company. For that, I had to prepare my technical base and get more test equipment in order to have a greater capability to do what I used to do. “Before 2011, I did more annual inspections, installations and installation repairs. Now, I can get my hands on equipment and fix it.” Recently, Filimon developed a package solution for converting Artex ME406 emergency locator transmitter installations into Kannad Integra ELT installations. “New Zealand regulations require the switches to be tested every six months,” Filimon said. Looking for the tiniest deviations from normal, Filimon has been perfecting his troubleshooting methods.

He takes nothing for granted. “I am educated not to be led by appearances, but to take a scientific approach and test it,” Filimon said. “For example, when I was working on a Convair with transmission problems, I found the antenna measurements suspicious. When I removed the antenna, a lot of water came out. On a Piper PA-28, the intercom was blowing the fuse in flight. I followed up the fault and found the intercom connector power lead was going farther into the installation to also power an audio amplifier KA-25A. Due to vibration, this terminal was not isolated and was touching the ground through the case.” With current avionics trends bringing new technology to older aircraft, Filimon sees potential on the horizon. “The increasing use of GPS in small aircraft navigation and tracking devices, such as Spider Track, are becoming more familiar,” he said. “The glass cockpit displays are starting to replace the mechanical instruments on the new light and small airplanes, where the new Mode S transponders have become more frequent. In the future, these changes may bring additional work for us, as well.” After 17 years, Liviu and Georgeta enjoy their life and work in New Zealand. While their daughters are grown now, living in Seattle, Wash., and Berlin, Germany, the couple feels fortunate to be surrounded by good friends and loyal customers in a new homeland. q
