“Competitive units will also give you turn points and even do calculations for flying contests,” Mara said. “They do things to help in handicapping races where you don’t have to fly all the way to a turn point. You can just fly somewhere near that area and gain points so you can pick the weather and where the best lift is. “We used to carry a Kodak Instamatic camera and take pictures when we got over a turn point. The judges would process the film as proof of our position. ing Commission) has created a set of rules for an approved flight recorder. If you want to go up and try and set some kind of world record in your glider, you need to have one of these IGC-approved units. It creates a secure file that validates you accomplished the task you are claiming.”

Power to the FLARM
While new GPS-based flight computers and high-end pneumatic variometers are all the rage in gliding, they’re not the only new avionics offerings. A rather recent technology that exploded in Europe and is now making its way to the U.S. is a compact anti-collision system called FLARM. “FLARM, or flight alarm, is like ADS-B, but instead of using the transponder, it transits your position and altitude over a dedicated

low-power radio unit,” Remde said. “Other FLARM-equipped gliders in your area can see your position on a compact display or gliding computer/ moving-map. “It’s finally been approved by the FCC, so we can now sell FLARM units in the U.S. The popular unit is called Power FLARM. It not only shows other FLRAM-equipped gliders in the area, it also displays transponder-equipped aircraft similar to a portable TCAS like the Zaon MRX unit.”

Motor-gliders Rev Up
Some of the relative newcomers to U.S. gliding are the new generation of motor-gliders and gliders with sustainer engines. With their engines and retractable propellers, pilots can either use the power for unassisted takeoffs or as get-home insurance, if they find themselves losing lift far from home.
