APPLE’S LATEST SMARTPHONE CREATES

CHAOS, OPPORTUNITY

THANKS TO CHANGES IN FORM FACTOR AND CONNECTOR TECHNOLOGY, APPLE’S NEW IPHONE 5 MAY NOT INTERFACE WITH EXISTING IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS, AND FORTHCOMING IPAD VERSIONS PROBABLY WON’T EITHER. BOTH OPERATORS AND INSTALLERS SHOULD PLAN FOR OBSOLESCENCE.

istory did not record the first time a passenger used a portable tape player or other device to listen to music during a flight. Before widespread use of battery-powered products like the Walkman, in-flight entertainment – IFE – mainly consisted of People magazine, yesterday’s Wall Street Journal or a catalog of over-priced gadgets you didn’t need. Today, even the average piston single sports a stereo intercom system and appropriate audio inputs for portable electronic devices, PEDs. Business, corporate and charter aircraft often are equipped with highquality IFE systems featuring many more choices for content along with built-in support of popular PEDs. These aircraft and their operators have something else in common: an increasing reliance on tablet computers for critical flight information. With the advent of smartphones, tablet computing and HD video capabilities on even the lowliest laptop, general and business avia-

tion IFE systems long ago bypassed onboard media storage and players in favor of the PED. The PED itself can be considered part of the operator’s equipment, dedicated to playing back IFE content, but just as easily can be a passenger’s personal phone or tablet. And given the worldwide popularity and market penetration of Apple’s line of music players, smartphones and tablets enjoys, the company’s iPhones and iPads often are the ones an IFE system’s connectors, docks and cradles are designed to accommodate. At least, that’s the way it’s been. Now, Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 5 in early September is sure to create some airborne chaos. That’s because the latest iPhone incorporates a new-design connector incompatible with the previous one. It’s also slightly taller (0.37 inches/8.6 millimeters) than its predecessors. Future versions of the iPad very likely will come with the new connector and probably in a different form factor. Both features
