Successful Demonstration of Rockwell Collins’ Autonomous Landing System on a Beechcraft Bonanza is a Big Step in Creating the ‘Digital Parachute’ for General Aviation Aircraft
eeing a Beechcraft Bonanza approaching Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport is hardly an unusual sight. After all, they are made there. But, if you could have seen inside this particular Bonanza flying this particular approach, you would have witnessed a very special landing indeed. What made this landing among the thousands performed so exceptional? It was the first time a Bonanza, or any other general aviation aircraft, completed a fully autonomous approach and landing. Autonomous, as in no physical controlling actions by the onboard “observers” at all: the three passengers just sat there and watched the Rockwell Collins fly-by-wire system make a landing that would have scored better than most of the other Bonanza touchdowns the runway has seen. Historical as the landing was, according to Dr. David Voss, senior director of unmanned aircraft systems and control technologies for Rockwell Collins, this was just another example of the technology they have in operation around the world. “We have grown up in the world of unmanned systems,” Voss said. “We have a number of unmanned airplanes around the world that we supply integrated sensor suites, flight computers, mission computers, auto takeoff and auto land capabilities. For example, on the Shadow UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) program, we provide all of the inner loop control laws that
