she laughed and joked, “No comment. You have to be flexible. When there’s a difference of opinion, you have to learn to listen and be able to see both sides. Working with my husband has added to the respect I have for him. He is honest and open and has built a wonderful business for our kids and employees. He is extremely knowledgeable and wonderful with customers. He is a very smart man.” Her son also works at Boshart Enterprises as an avionics technician, after receiving his avionics technician degree from the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. “I don’t see too much of either of them during the day,” she said. Her advice for people beginning to work with a spouse is this: “Communication, including listening, is everything. Sometimes you’ve got to hold in what you want to say.” It’s Carol’s hope that their son or employees will have an interest in taking over the business. One of the joys of owning a business, Carol believes, is how

your employees become your family. “Most have worked here for years,” she said. “They were hired as kids, and seeing them evolve over the years is awesome.” Their current avionics manager, Brian Walters, started working at Boshart when he was 17. “It’s amazing to see how he’s grown and how good he is at his job.” On the downside is how much worry there is as an owner, but the company remains successful. Carol credits this to being unwilling to take some risks that other small companies take. “We still rent the facility we’re in,” she said. “Right now, putting up a building of our own is a risk we won’t take.” Carol doesn’t think she and Jeff may ever retire. For now, they’re enjoying their children and five grandchildren who all live nearby. Their hope is the business will continue when they’re gone. For now, Carol said, “We just keep making it grow.” In the end, Carol and her husband share a 50-50 partnership. “I certainly couldn’t do this without him, and I don’t think he could do it without me,” she said. q
