outside the trade show entrance to tell me that he misplaced his nametag. “Can you get me another one?” he asked, as if he was asking me to pass the butter. Sure, it’s opening day, and I am being pulled in 10 different directions, but I’ll drop everything to stand in line for 45 minutes and try to get an extra nametag from the show management. A course I took at the school of hard knocks taught me to put my rental car keys, hotel key, nametag and wristband in one location in my room – typically on top of the TV. No more mad scrambles in the morning, and no cursing halfway to the show when I pat my lapel and find it empty.
You may want to buy some snacks or power bars to have rather than rely on the unhealthy food many convention centers offer. Try to keep your sleep schedule close to what you do at home. Wash your hands often. People come to trade shows from all around the globe, which means they also bring germs from all around the globe. Unless you want to take home some funky virus, bring along some hand sanitizer and use it. Your attendance at a trade show may simply be part of your job, but your first time is part of a test. Your boss may not be standing back with a clipboard rating your performance, but make no mistake; your behavior is being monitored. Many of us could swap war stories of employees who found themselves unemployed because of their actions at a show. In my experience, it’s never the primary reason for termination, but it’s always a contributing factor. With a little preparation, your first show will set the stage for many successful shows to come and a long, happy career with your current or future employer. See you at the show. q
