related to the overall economy and the public’s opinion that it caters only to the elite. But, there is a flip side to this coin, one built upon enhancing operational efficiency, flexibility and safety. It’s constructed of ones and zeros, and it has the avionics industry written all over it. The technology being deployed throughout aviation today – in both the commercial and non-commercial segments – may have arrived a bit more slowly than it did at the automotive, information or entertainment industries. That’s one thing that happens when regulating authorities – justifiably concerned with safety – require fail-safe quality and reliability standards. Meeting those standards certainly can be challenging, but the end result is where it really matters. And, the advanced capabilities available today in aircraft of all sizes finally have caught up to what is available in our everyday lives. It hasn’t been easy – and it’s not over with yet. Increasingly, connectivity is the name of the game, as manufacturers, engineers and technicians work to ensure all devices aboard the aircraft work and play well with each other. It doesn’t matter if those devices are bolted down or brought aboard by passengers and crew. Today, installing one company’s autopilot, driven by a second company’s navigation engine and displayed on a third manufacturer’s video screen, into an airframe built before GPS was a twinkle in anyone’s eye, is all rather routine. It wasn’t that way, even a decade ago. And, when the avionics industry has the opportunity to design-in its magic from the beginning, modern aircraft are true marvels of technology. If that description of today’s avionics industry doesn’t generate some pride, consider the tale of Retired Air Force Col. Mark Tillman, former presidential pilot, who delivered the keynote address to attendees at the AEA Official Opening. As commander of Air Force One, Tillman was in the left seat for two of the aircraft’s most famous trips: Its return from Sarasota, Fla., on Sept. 11, 2001, and President George W. Bush’s top-secret visit to Baghdad, Iraq, on Thanksgiving Day, 2003. Col. Tillman’s presentation, punctuated by candid images of the plane and its people, emphasized how much he and his Air Force One crew depended on the avionics industry’s products to meet mission goals. Tillman, whose appearance was sponsored by Universal Avionics Systems Corp., twice thanked attendees during his address for their efforts to ensure the success of those missions. Never before in the avionics industry’s relatively short

More than 75 hours of training was available to attendees at the 2012 convention, including Fast Traks training, which included courses in four categories: general aviation, business aviation, repair station operations and professional development.

history has there been so much technology, options or capability. In all of these things, and more, the avionics industry can take pride. TAKE OWNERSHIP. The ownership concept means different things to different people, of course. To some, it can mean acquiring the trappings of comfort and power. To others, it translates to assuming responsibility for one’s situation and doing what’s necessary and appropriate to improve. It’s here that this part of the AEA’s theme for its convention resides. With the pace of change in the electronics and software sector showing no signs of slowing down, any industry basing itself on producing and installing stateof-the-art communications, navigation and surveillance equipment has to keep up. As Greg Vail, chair of the AEA board of directors, told attendees during the show’s welcoming address, “Change has become an operative word.” His meaning? It’s imperative that the industry
