after 14 years with United Airlines, she created the certificate and bachelor’s curriculum that emphasizes essential skills and easily adapts to a changing industry. Like students everywhere, K-Staters get hands on with G1000s and 430s and all the rest. What’s different is the 6:1 ratio of lab to lecture hours and a focus on personal responsibility. For example, in the installation class each student must wire a 430 with course deviation indicator and audio panel, and 20 percent fail “because of their timeline,” said Alexander, who began her avionics career in 1980 with the U.S. Marine Corps. She gives no due date in the semester-long course. Students must plan every aspect of the job, from tools and supplies to the all important troubleshooting time, “because the grade is based on the finished project’s operation.” The goal is to teach the skills they need to succeed, independence, responsibility, how to find needed information on their own, and self-inspecting their work before asking “are you willing to sign your livelihood off on what you’re handing in for a grade?” Using the full range of test equipment, students spend hours

troubleshooting problems found “in a hangar full of broke airplanes” used by A&P students. This allows students to make mistakes on unairworthy aircraft, giving them “teaching moments,” said Alexander. One student, working his way forward from the tail of a Baron, spent three hours “trying to find the open in a power wire… it was a bad circuit breaker. He’s never going to make that mistake again,” and neither will his classmates. K-State also works differently with its 95 industry partners and advisors (who say in-flight-entertainment systems and ADS-B are subjects the program should investigate). Whether it’s an OEM or local shop, each shares what they know with students, whether it’s a new piece of equipment or a new solution to a vexing problem. Like doctors keeping current in their specialty, avionics technicians must keep pace with technology through self-study, a skill – and resources – best learned and developed with the feedback the classroom provides. “We get so caught up in who’s got the best and (latest technology) that we don’t look at the other things industry partners can provide us,” said Alexander, “the information they can provide to our students.” q
