like that, then I went to bench work, then flight line maintenance, then autopilots.” Aside from a few junior college electrical engineering courses and OEM schools on specific avionics equipment, Jimmy’s education has all been on the job. “I’ve done everything, so it’s easy to know what it takes to get the job done, most of the time.” Marshall retired from daily business in his seventh decade, in the waning years of the 20th century. There was no planning or preliminary “conversation about

the transition,” Jimmy said. “He had a medical issue and had to take off, and I took over. I’d been doing quotes and stuff for four or five years. I just assumed more and more responsibilities.” Until this time, “I just had a bench,” he said, chuckling. “I didn’t start sitting at his desk until he had his medical issues.” Marshall keeps up with the industry, but he said technology made most of its leaps after his retirement, where he enjoys doing “nothing.” Noting that Jimmy makes most decisions, “I don’t have much input,” said Marshall, who really doesn’t get involved unless “he needs something big… (as CEO) I have to sign for it.”

An example would be Temple’s second facility, 40 miles north on I-45, at the Lone Star Executive Airport in Conroe. Jimmy bought and reopened a shuttered shop there in 2003. “It was rough in the beginning,” he said, adding that five of Temple’s 17 employees now work there, “but they did $1.5 million in sales last year.” Like its Houston location, context with the area economy explains Conroe’s success. It starts with I-45, which connects Houston and Dallas. Completed just after the millennium, it turned Conroe into one of Houston’s bedroom communities, and its population grew from 36,811 in 2000, to 56,207 in 2010. Where people go, airplanes soon follow. There are 294 aircraft based at Conroe (220 singles, 29 twins, 19 jets, two helicopters and 24 military aircraft). The control tower coordinates an average of 80,000 operations a year, with transient general aviation aircraft accounting for 39 percent of the total. At either Houston Hobby or Conroe’s Lone Star Executive, an average of 300 based aircraft is not a bad customer base, especially when it doesn’t include aircraft owners based at the dozen or so airports within a 300-mile radius. With Temple Electronics as his legacy, and looking forward, Marshall said having a son to run the business has “been a real blessing, and he runs it really well. They’ve been busy through all the downturns. They’ve made real good progress up in Conroe. He hasn’t had a slow year yet.” q
