ICG’s eRouter
Offers New Design
Enhancements

uring this year’s Aircraft Electronics Association
International Convention & Trade Show in Las
Vegas, Nev., ICG (International Communications
Group Inc.) announced several, “customer-inspired”
modifications to the design of its new eRouter to enhance
performance. According to the company, the modifications
also make it easier for operators to perform maintenance,
setup configuration, and access SIM and memory cards
without having to remove the unit from the aircraft. ICG
reported the changes have not impacted deliveries to date, or
for the fourth quarter of 2013.
The eRouter provides airborne connectivity for electronic
flight bags, passenger PCs, smartphones and other IP devices,
and offers many features found in a typical corporate office
network. The eRouter is a small, 12-inch-by 8.5-inchby-3.75-inch flange mount device, which offers access to
multiple communications networks.
The device uses a nonproprietary wide area network
interface, which allows it to connect to nearly any
communications medium with an industry standard WAN
output. According to Andrew Mayfield, ICG’s marketing
manager, “ICG will conduct testing to validate additional
communications mediums in the coming months, but
essentially, the industry standard interfaces allow the eRouter
to be compatible with existing and new communications
networks as new constellations are launched.” When
compared to other manufacturers, which limit connectivity,

Mayfield sees an advantage in using the ICG eRouter, since it
can be connected to almost any communication system.
The company believes that those with satellite
communications, such as Inmarsat, SwiftBroadband, Ku/Ka
VSAT, Iridium and others, will find the eRouter a benefit to
their aircraft. Weighing less than 8 pounds, the ICG eRouter
is the lightest available device of its kind. The eRouter
manages connectivity for all cabin crew, flight deck and
aircraft system data communication requirements.
In addition to Satcom connectivity, the eRouter offers 4G
GSM (global system for mobile) cellular service that can
be used for data and file transfers when the aircraft is on the
ground. According to Informa Telecoms and Media, the 4G
