"The FAA has made quantum leaps in the training and
education of their personnel, the inclusion of night vision
operations into the Federal Aviation Regulations, and changes
in policy relating to night vision goggles have all contributed to
the advancement of night operations," he said. "There are still
myths and stigmas attached to night vision goggles. We must
continue to advance education, training, and information for
our regulators and the industry in night vision operations."
During the last eight years, ASU had an exclusive contract
with the FAA to train principle operations inspectors and
aviation safety inspectors on NVG. The company trained more
than 87 FAA inspectors and 2,000 pilots, and provided more
than 70 recurrent training courses through its FAA-approved
Part 141 training program and Part 135 air operator certificate.
Even as ASU serves its large base of domestic customers,
Atwood sees a considerable number of untapped markets,
including outside the U.S.
"They need to operate with night vision goggles; it is
no longer an option," Atwood said. "For companies and
militaries to conduct night operations safely, they must have
night vision goggles. We're now seeing quality 'exportable'
generation three night vision products, increased demands
for night operations for EMS, LE and SAR, and new aircraft
platforms being considered for night vision operations.
"And there are still many operations, both EMS and law
enforcement, that have not made the move or started night
vision programs due to funding, perceptions or whatever

reason. But the trend appears to be that if you are operating at
night, then you should be operating with night vision goggles.
We've definitely seen increased interest with international
customers."
To help meet the growing demand for night vision
equipment, ASU is building a new, 27,000-square-foot facility
with new office space, hangar and avionics shop next to the
company's existing structure.
"We're looking at the future for strategic growth, increased
capabilities and customer support," Atwood said. "We have
many exciting, new ideas for the future." q
