organization's linguists and translators,

Keeping Track
In October, Marsden and Daniel Jezowski, an avionics
technician, installed v2track in one of the organization's
Bell 206L3 helicopters. The flight-following system,
created by a New Zealand company of the same name,
tracks GPS position data and reports information via
cellphone or, if out of cell coverage, satellite phone, to the
v2track system.
"Our flight coordinators can follow the aircraft's
progress," Marsden said. "Plus, the system allows for
texting between aircraft and operations. It will also send
out alert messages if an emergency comes up. Those
messages can go to several different cellphones depending
on who is on our notification list. We now have a V2
tracker system installed in one of the Kodiaks and one
in each of the Bell 206L3s. In the near future, we'll be
installing the system in the other three Kodiaks."

Helping to Save Lives
Keeping the aircraft ready to fly and fully operating is often
the difference that saves lives. One such instance happened
in March when SIL Aviation's two technicians scrambled to
finish installing a receptacle used to power a medical stretcher
sled in one of the organization's Quest Kodiaks. Without the
receptacle, the crew would need to load an extra 60 kilograms
(132 pounds) of batteries to power the medical equipment for
the four-hour flight to Cairns, Australia.
"As the inspection progressed, our aircraft coordinator
looked at the upcoming flight schedule and felt an unexpected
need to finish the stage inspection earlier than scheduled,"
Marsden explained. "He asked all of the engineers to stay late
to finish the inspection. We pulled together as a team and were
able to finish the inspection early.
