At the dawn of powered flight's second century, he wanted
more than offering investment and advice because "I actually
know how to do this," he said. Given the time and money required to develop and certify "a nontrivial product, it must have
a good chance of getting market share to justify the significant
investment." Knowing he was not the only one pursuing this
Mode S product, Davis figured there was enough room in the
market for several players.
Enlisting Martin Gray, an associate from Spider, as Trig's
second employee, the pair started work on what would become the TT31. That it bears a family resemblance to the
BendixKing Silver Crown is no accident. Researching the European light aircraft market, Davis accepted as fact that those
with a Garmin stack would install a Garmin Mode S transponder. But many more airplanes were flying with "a mix of
equipment from different manufacturers." Most of them employed a KT76 transponder, so the TT31 is a plug-and-play
replacement for it, said Davis, "and we've sold thousands of
them in Europe."
Like America's light sport aircraft, European microlights
have a weight limit, so every ounce counts, Davis said. To
meet their needs, Trig put the 2.8-pound TT31 on a diet. The
only thing the 130-watt TT21 and 250-watt TT22 lost was
weight. Both units weigh just 0.8 pounds, and their control
heads fit in a 2.25-inch round hole. Some of the first users of
this equipment, however, were in America.

To test the ADS-B ground network it was building for the
Federal Aviation Administration, ITT needed DO-260B avionics. "Because we were first out of the gate with this stuff,
even before we had the TSO they were flying Trig products
in the national airspace system," Davis said. The other customer was the FAA, which installed the TT22 with altitude
reporting in a box with a blind IFR-certified WAAS GPS like
FreeFlight's 1201 and a data logging system, and strapped it
into one of its airway check aircraft.
By contributing to this testing, "we got some insights into
how the system was working," Davis said. "It made us converts because it really worked. The coverage is awesome. ITT
delivered coverage better than the FAA minimum, (and) over
huge swaths of (America) it goes down to 200 feet."
