a deep menu largely equivalent to those provided by subscriptionbased services.
Fans of subscription-based products can deploy a portable receiver with Bluetooth for wireless communicating to a display of
the XM WX datalink weather received; the subscription is more
than the price.
Traffic-wise, however, the ADS-B In receiver deserves a
bit of added consideration from shoppers, since not all ADSB In receivers provide the same coverage.
The most-basic units receive TIS-B and ADS-B Out signals
within coverage range, which should make 90 percent of traffic visible – traffic still squawking
only Mode A/C/S as seen by the
air traffic control radar that feeds
TIS-B.
Absent a TIS-B feed, the ADSB In receiver may be showing the
pilot only ADS-B Out signals of
in-range traffic – no Mode A/C/Ssquawking traffic.
A number of available ADS-B
solutions for portables cover all
the bases, getting TIS-B and ADSB Out signals and relays through
the ADS-B ground stations.
Even some TSO’d units meant
for aircraft install cover all the
bases – as well as covering both
spectrums of ADS-B Out service,
1090 extended squitter (for above
flight level 180) and 978 MHz
universal access transceiver signal
for traffic up to FL180.
Likewise, some portable systems also provide an ADS-B Out
solution, albeit not to the TSO
standard required of equipment needed to meet the 2020
mandate that all aircraft employ ADS-B Out with an approved position-information source, such as WAAS GPS.
One of the most-popular options is a weather-only FISB ADS-B In receiver that became available last summer, the Stratus Portable Weather for ForeFlight
Mobile.
This box uses wireless connectivity to work
with an iPhone or iPad, and it uses its own internal GPS receiver to orient itself and an integral ADS-B In receiver and internal antenna to

receive FIS-B broadcasts via the FAA’s network of ADS-B
ground stations.
Stratus sends the following weather products to ForeFlight: NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, SIGMETs,
AIRMETs, NOTAMs, pilot reports and wind/temperature
aloft. An internal lithium-ion battery provides eight hours
of wireless operation.
The product requires what’s arguably considered among
the best deals in general aviation charting, ForeFlight Mobile – version 4.5 or later.
ForeFlight Mobile is a flight planning, flight support and
electronic flight bag application for pilots flying with iPad
and iPhone.
While the software and hardware will cost the pilot
initially, the savings over a weather-data subscription accumulate to cover an investment in approximately 18
months of flying.
Other
charting/flightplanning options include the
Garmin Pilot, available in
standard and pro levels with
annual subscriptions.
And don’t neglect NACO
– the FAA’s own AeroNav
Charting products and the
low-cost readers available.
The break-even bar falls
even faster when you calculate the savings in updates
to approach plates, SIDs,
STARs and en route charts.
Of course, other options exist with similar
benefits, among them the
Dual XGPS170, a GPS and
ADS-B weather receiver;
Garmin’s standout GDL 39
ADS-B/GPS receiver or the
Levil AHRS G Mini-Attitude/Heading Reference System, a package that
turns your portable display into a portable, standby instrument-flight stack.
