direct-connect if required,” Beasley said. “We have an
antenna coupler, which goes over the aircraft antenna.
Not quite as good as a radiated check, but if the
antenna is broken, it will show up. There’s an
automatic test, which completes not only the FAR
checks but also additional tests recommended by
EUROCONTROL for enhanced surveillance. The
test gives you an overall pass/fail, identifies
problems and stores detailed results for
printout. We have the ability to capture and
decode data transmitted by the transponder
for ADS-B Mode S operation. On the
transponder, you also can run individual tests,
including testing for squawk code input and
Mode C altitude.”
Beasley noted common problems encountered during
transponder testing include “moisture in the coax,
which affects VSWR. You can also see bad connectors.
Typically those will show a 10 decibel drop, and you’ll
fail the test.”
One area where regulatory guidance seems to be
somewhat unclear is ADS-B system testing. Mode S
transponders with 1090 megahertz extended squitter
support are covered under the FAR 91 Appendix F
mandate for transponder tests, but it appears there is no
explicit requirement for testing 978 MHz universal access
transceiver systems.

However, AC 43-6C includes a warning: “For ADS-B
systems, alteration of the transponder or any of the source
system components may impact the system’s ability to
meet the requirements of § 91.227… Any alteration of
the transponder, the position source, other source system
components, or their interconnectivity must include an
analysis and evaluation showing that the alteration does
not impact the system’s compliance with § 91.227.”
